By the end of the financial year 2013-14, the Andhra Pradesh government aims to add at least 4,000 mw of power production capacity in order to meet the shortage of electricity.

The state government’s power generation firm AP Genco is said to be in the advanced stage of commissioning at least three projects, including two units of 800 mw at Krishnapatnam, another one at Bhupalapally.

The proposed capacity addition may ease the demand supply situation in the state. The capacity addition will come in from 1,600 mw project at Krishnapatnam, 600 mw from Bhupalapally of AP Genco, 1,040 mw of Hinduja National Power and from another project in Ramagundam.

Hiralal Samaria, Chairman and Managing Director of AP Transco informed that the state will also receive its share of power from NTPC Tuticorin project and NTPC joint venture project at Vallur in Tamil Nadu.

By December 2014, AP Genco expects that its consumers could access more than 3,000 mw of power.
In addition, wind and solar projects will augment new capacities.

AP Genco expects demand to rise in the next two months as farmers begin to use pump sets in June. To bridge the gap, the firm invited tenders and expects to finalise them shortly. The State electricity regulator has already approved the move.

Shortage of power intensified because of lack of sufficient supply of natural gas to fuel power plants and low water levels in reservoirs.
