Jharkhand government received a request from the state-run Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) for allocating the over 2,600 acre Ghatkuri iron ore mine, located at the West Singhbhum district.
The company wants the mine, which is estimated to have 600 million tonne reserves, for its proposed 3 million tonne per annum (mn tpa) steel plant in the state.
The company is expected to invest Rs 16,500 crore on the proposed steel plant. AP Choudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of RINL already communicated the intention of the company for setting up the facility to state government at a recent meeting with Jharkhand’s Chief Secretary.
The company would go ahead with the project only if it gets iron ore mine and if the techno economic feasibility study favours the project.
Some reports indicate that the state government is keen on giving the Ghatkuri mine to the Jharkhand State Mineral Development Corporation (JSMDC). Thus, the officials have suggested RINL to ink a joint venture pact with JSMDC to ensure steady supply to the project. RINL has agreed to the state’s suggestion.
RINL also proposes to set up a beneficiation plant and a steel rolling mill of initial capacity of one million tonne each and plans to double or treble capacity in stages.
