Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan informed that the estimated capacity expansion for the 12 major ports by the end of the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12) was 1001.80 million tonne (mn t) per annum according to the 11th Plan working group report for port industry.
India at present has 12 Major ports Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Kandla, Kolkata-Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, VO Chidambaranar (formerly Tuticorin), Cochin, New Mangalore and Mormugao.
Whereas the estimated total capacity was 1001.8 mn t by March 2012, the actual capacity at these major ports turned out to be 747.51 mn t by the end of the period.
Vasan said his ministry has taken various steps including standardization of various documents such as model concession agreement, enhanced delegation of financial powers to the shipping ministry to accord investment approvals for Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects, streamlining the security clearance procedures and close monitoring.
Meanwhile, official data shows cargo traffic at 12 major ports in the country declined by 2.58 at 545.68 mn t during 2012-13. This includes 93.62 mn t cargo handled by Kandla port.
