On July 19, Chennai Port Trust (CPT) has organised a trade show in Hyderabad to showcase various facilities available with the port and how it would be useful to importers and exporters.
The port decided to hold the event as it realised that a lot of cargo from CPT goes to Andhra hinterland.
Industry watchers warn that CPT must improve its marketing or else traders would slowly move towards newer ports like Krishnapatnam, L&T and Karaikal, which are aggressively positioning their services in the market.
It may be noted that tobacco, granite and pharmaceutical products are the main cargo that come to CPT from Andhra.
The portÂ’s main thrust areas would be project cargo, cars, granite, food grains and containerised cargo, as the city port is better connected with ports of different continents.
Industry sources feel that Chennai is a major container port in the southern region, with six feeder vessels and five mainline vessels coming to the harbour.
Meanwhile, the port authority appointed a consultant to find better ways of using the now vacant Bharati dock 2, which was earlier used to handle iron ore.
