Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) completed a greenfield deep water container terminal project within 28 months as against the original timeframe of 60 months.

Work on the terminal began in December 2011. In the course of time, the terminal operator or CICT revised the plan and expedited the project to complete it within 28 months.

The terminal, which is owned and operated by CICT, launched operations recently. Tissa Wickramasinghe, General Manager of CICT said this was a significant milestone in the history of the Port of Colombo, where a green field project has been constructed, equipped and made operational ahead of original time-lines.

CICT completed the first phase of construction within 19 months and it recently started commercial operation with the largest ever ship-to-shore gantry cranes.

With this new terminal, the Port of Colombo becomes the only one in the South Asia region with a deep-water terminal to handle the largest ships afloat.

The container terminal has a water depth of 18 metre and has installed ship-to-shore quay gantry cranes to handle 18,000 TEU ships which have containers stacked 24 across.
