GMB committee calls for digitized mapping of pipelines

An expert panel of Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) suggested government to prepare digitized maps of all the oil and gas pipelines on the coast of Gujarat.

This suggestion was made by a two-member panel after probing the recent oil seepage in Narmada river near Bhadbhut.

Recently, there was a rupture in a gas pipeline of Gas Authority of India (GAIL). In another incident, oil spillage was reported from a pipeline of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) at the end of August near Bhadbhut.

Following this, the panel was formed by the state government. Members of the panel were Captain SC Mathur, chief nautical officer and Atul Sharma, deputy general manager of environment cell of GMB.

The panel feels the need for grid mapping as many of the pipelines transporting gas and oil had been laid long time ago and due precaution may not have been taken while they were being laid down.

Such mapping would enable retrieval of information about how many pipelines are there, along with their specifications.

The panel feels lack of proper shoreline change studies in view of prediction of maximum possible discharge of the flow of river in designing such river crossing pipelines.
