To get its chapel shifted to Madel in Margao, Managing Committee of St Francis Xavier Chapel had been literally running from pillar to post. The Chapel wants to shift from the old market-KTC bus stand road to opposite the road at Madel and it is trying for the same for the post 12 years. Once the chapel shifted, it will pave the way for widening of the KTC bus stand road.
The committee had pleaded for land of 800 sq mts, but the authorities literally dragged their feet on the land allotment willing to settle for only 600 sq mts. After 12 years, the committee now sees a ray of hope of getting its dream fulfilled of shifting the chapel opposite the road at Madel.
The inspection saw district Collector N D Agrawal, GSIDC officials along with Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai inspecting all the three chapels, including St Francis Xavier at Madel, for their shifting as per Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s assurances.
Chapel committee President Osvi Da Costa said that the Fatorda MLA has taken up their demand for land admeasuring 800 sq mts and expressed confidence that the chapel will be shifted to the new location at the earliest.
District Collector N D Agrawal said the government has come out with a policy on religious structures, wherein structures will be either retained, shifted or removed. “The Fatorda MLA has taken a good initiative, while the people are ready for shifting,” he said.
Sardessai said the GSIDC has been appointed as the nodal agency to implement the shifting of all the three chapels in Fatorda constituency.
