In addition to the existing berths, the Ennore Port (EPL) has initiated process to build one more berth to meet the increasing demand of coal for Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco).
Presently, Tangedco operates 2 coal berths in Ennore Port with a yearly installed capacity to handle 12 million tonnes (mt).
Tangedco imported 7.27 mt and 3.05 mt against 5.56 mt and 0.92 mt of coal respectively, for the first 9 months of the present year, .
Tangedco plans to boost the capacity of its second berth by 2 mt by mid-2014 and by another 2 mt by the year-end, according to sources.
