As part of its green initiative, the Indian Railways will promote use of renewable and clean energy in 26 buildings, 200 railway stations and 2,000 level crossing gates across the country in the next fiscal. The move also includes making arrangements of ´watch and ward´ staff to check open defecation and littering near stations. Highlighting the initiatives in the rail budget for 2014-15, Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge also proposed to create ´Green Curtains´ through landscaping and plantation along the tracks near the stations.
As part of promoting use of renewable and clean energy, the Railway Energy Management Company will work on setting up windmill plants and solar power plants with about 40 per cent subsidy from the ministry of new and renewable energy.
