In a move to check galloping power crisis in the state, UP government has sent a proposal to the Union Power Ministry to set up a 4,000 MW ultra-mega thermal power plant (UMTPP) in Karchana tehsil of Allahabad.
This is the second site after Etah that the state government has suggested for the UMTPP, nearly two months after the Centre decided to set up five such plants across the country.
Confirming the development, Sanjay Prasad, Power Secretary and MD of UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam, said that the plant, if taken up by the Centre, would easily get coal linkage, besides generating power at a lower cost.
The new proposal comes days after UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav asked the energy department to send a proposal to the Centre for setting up a UMTPP.
