At least 59 mega central sector infrastructure projects worth Rs 10 billion each, have reported a cost overrun of Rs 1.36 trillion. As per Vijay Goel, Union Minister, a total of 389 mega projects worth more than Rs 10 billion including rail and road sectors were on the monitor of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI). Due to a delay in their completion, out of the 389 projects, the cost of 59 projects has increased by Rs 1.36 trillion. Also, 38 power projects are showing a delay in completion and cost overruns. The total original cost of implementation of these projects was Rs 1.49 trillion and their anticipated completion cost is likely to be Rs 1.96 trillion, which reflects an overall cost overrun of Rs 465.9 billion.
