This collaboration with EIL, India’s public sector EPC leader, marks a strategic milestone in developing integrated, indigenous solutions for cleaner energy production.

NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated power utility, has signed a strategic agreement with Engineers India Ltd (EIL) to develop a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) facility aimed at enhancing grid stability and as part of its own contribution to the country’s energy transition.

The proposed facility will convert high-ash Indian coal from NTPC’s captive mines into SNG, a cleaner fuel alternative for NTPC’s gas-based power stations and in-situ generation. This initiative is part of NTPC’s broader push to adopt coal gasification technologies that enable sustainable utilisation of domestic coal reserves, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and lower emissions.

The project is being spearheaded by NETRA, NTPC’s R&D wing, under its ‘Greening the Coal’ initiative. NETRA is also advancing carbon capture and utilisation technologies, positioning NTPC as a leader in innovation-driven sustainability. The collaboration with EIL, the public sector engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) leader, marks a significant milestone in developing integrated, indigenous solutions for cleaner energy production.

NTPC currently contributes nearly one-fourth of India’s power requirements, with an installed capacity of 84 GW and an additional 30.90 GW under construction. This includes 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity. The company is targeting 60 GW of renewables by 2032.

Beyond conventional power generation, NTPC has diversified into emerging sectors such as e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro, waste-to-energy, nuclear power, and green hydrogen. It has also participated in competitive bidding for power distribution in Union Territories, further expanding its footprint in India’s energy ecosystem.
