The Indian Railways seeks increase in budgetary support for 2013-14 to Rs 38,000 crore from Rs 24,000 crore in the current financial year because of rise in diesel cost and a large number of pending projects.During the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), Railways plans to invest Rs 5 trillion in capacity addition.

DFCC awards Rs 33 bn project
Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation has issued letter of intent for the Rs 3,300 crore contract to set up rail track between Bhaupur and Khurja in U.P. to a consortium of Tata Projects and Spanish firm Aldesa. The consortium is expected to begin physical work on the 343-km rail track project, which is funded by the World Bank, from March-April.The 343-km project was sliced into three subsets, and the bidders had been qualified to bid for one, two or all three.
Chennai metro rail seen by April 2014
The Chennai Metro Rail service may commence operĆĀation between the Koyambedu-St Thomas Mount stretch by March-end or early April 2014. By the end of November 2013, Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) plans to test run a full-length four-car metro train with a functional signal system. By late August or early September, CMRL plans to put on trial the front car comprising the engine on the elevated corridor.
Kochi metro SPV
In order to facilitate coordinated planning and implementation of the city's transportation network, Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) plans to set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV). The SPV, which would be set up under the aegis of the Unified Metropolitan Authority, would focus on the development of Kochi city's waterways, which will be integrated with the proposed metro rail system.
New UPS express service
For urgent, time sensitive and high value international heavyweight shipments, UPS has announced a new express air freight service, UPS Worldwide Express Freight. This new service is an extension of the UPS Worldwide Express package portfolio. Customers now can ship pallets over 70 kg as easily as packages exclusively within UPS's global air network from 37 origins to 41 destination countries.
SER's freight load up
During the April-December 2012-13, freight loading by South Eastern Railway (SER) rose 4.56 per cent to 92.16 million tonne (mn t) as against 88.14 mn t during the year-ago period. Till December 2012, the performance of SER surpassed the target laid down by Railway Board. The division loaded 5.75 mn t more than the Railway Board target, an increase of 6.65 per cent.
Kolkata airport terminal
In Kolkata, the new integrated terminal of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport may take more than two months to be fully operational with all the promised facilities in place. On January 19, Airports Authority of India said that the airport would be operational by March.
Delhi Airport Metro reopens
Delhi Airport Metro Express (DAMEPL) announced that the Airport Metro line resumed commercial operations at its regular timing from January 22. India's first Airport Express initially started its commercial operation on February 23, 2011.
Bharti Airtel reduces GHG emissions
Bharti Airtel said that it had reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per terabyte in network infrastructure by 11 per cent in financial 2011-12. It also saved 20 million KWh of energy by consolidating its facilities and improving energy efficiency of its data centre.
As part of its initiatives to enĆĀsure sustainability and increase social inclusion, Airtel plans to bring digitisation to millions through its network coverage and deeper internet penetration.
RIL plans multi-purpose telecom towers
Reliance Industries plans to set up three-in-one telecom towers, starting with Mumbai, as it readies to launch fourth generation telecom services across the country. RIL is slated to launch 4G operations this year through its subsidiary Infotel Broadband.Infotel Broadband plans to set up towers that would support its 4G equipment (base transceiver stations) and video cameras for street surveillance.
