The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will no longer repair road trenches dug by utility companies. Instead, the civic body has now decided to ask the utility companies to reinstate the roads. Earlier, the BMC used to award the reinstatement work of trenches to the contractors and charge the utilities for this.
However, there were several complaints of financial indiscipline in these contracts. Following the financial indiscipline the BMC has decided against awarding trench re-instatement tenders and the reinstatement will have to be done by the utility company. In a circular issued by the BMC, the utility companies have been told to repair the trenches. For this, they will have to deposit 115 per cent of the reinstatement cost to the civic body.
After reinstatement, which will be monitored by the civic engineer from the road department, 100 per cent of the reinstatement cost will be returned and 15 per cent will be kept as supervision charges. Under the current system, the BMC charges the utility companies Rs 80 lakh for digging one kilometre of road and the reinstatement charges were around Rs 30 lakh, which includes three years of guarantee period.
However, going by the new circular, the BMC will lose the surplus amount of Rs 50 lakh and there will not be any guarantee period of the work carried out, said a civic official.
