Cargo handling capacity of Chennai terminal doubles

The cargo handling capacity of Chennai International Terminals has doubled to 1.1 million TEUs with the procurement of some additional equipments.

Following the procurement, the terminal owned and managed by PSA International, now has seven super post panamax quay cranes (all twin lifts) and 18 rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

The company is also increasing the number of reefer plugs in the terminal and will be constructing an additional stacking yard to meet the business demands.

It currently has five mainline services to East Asia, two Colombo services and two coastal services calling at the terminal, the firm said in a press release.

Meanwhile in a landmark event, the Chennai International Terminals recently handled its millionth container since commencement of terminal operations.

The one-millionth container was handled on vessel mv Tiger Bridge which operates on the Chennai-Colombo shuttle service managed by Bengal Tiger Lines. The terminal also welcomed the maiden call of the Asia Chennai Service.

The vessel mv Hyundai Future that berthed at the terminal on November 13 is one of the four vessels deployed on the Asia Chennai Service, operated by the Korean line Hyundai Merchant Marine, according to a press release from Chennai International Terminals.
