Cargo volume at Mumbai Port rises 9%

Cargo volume at Mumbai Port rises 9%

During Apr-Dec 2012, Mumbai Port Trust handled 44 million tonne cargo compared to 40.2 million tonne in the year-ago period, which is a growth of 9 percent, the port authority said in a statement.

Cargo handled during December increased to 5.2 million tonne from 4.6 million tonne for the same month in 2011.

During Apr-Dec 2012, the port handled 45,776 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU) of container cargo, which is same as the volume in the year-ago period.

The port handled 56 million tonne cargo or 3 percent higher volume during 2011-12 (Apr-Mar), compared to the earlier financial year. In 2010-11, the port handled 54.5 million tonne cargo. However, the port handled about 20 percent less container volume at 57,760 TEU during 2011-12.
