SC’s nod to delinking of environment, forest clearances
The Supreme Court has approved the revised norms for infrastructure road projects that delink the environment and forest clearances - formulated by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) last month to end the face-off between the environment and forests ministry and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). On the basis of its interpretation of a judgment in the case of Lafarge, the ministry had insisted such projects should take environment and forest clearances.
Mumbai civic body to identify new roads in bad shape
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), wary of facing flak over bumpy roads this monsoon, has decided to appoint three independent consultants to study newly re-laid roads that are in the warranty period so that roads with defects are identified and the road contractors concerned penalised.

Four years after holding public hearings, the Tamil Nadu State Highways DepartmentĆās proposals to construct two road under bridges (RUBs) to replace level crossings in Chennai's Annamalai Nagar and Wimco remain only in paper. Thiruvottiyur residents are irked over inordinate delay in taking up the RUB work which would cut down travelling time for the people living in western parts of the locality.
MLA launches Rs 1.57 cr road works in Vijayawada
Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu on March 12 performed a bhoomi puja for initiation of road works worth Rs 1.57 crore at several places in Circle-2 and directed the officials concerned to expedite the projects.
In the 47 division of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, the MLA performed bhoomi puja for conversion of the existing cement roads into black top roads at Pothurivari street and old current office road with Special Development Fund.
Widening of road to Kochi airport in progress
In a bid to solve the road congestion enroute Nedumbassery airport, the Cochin International Airport (CIAL) has begun widening of the two-lane road from Athani to the international airport in Kochi. If all goes well, the road widening work will be completed within a year. The existing two-lane road will pave way for a four-lane National Highway thus helping to decongest the road.
Chandigarh civic body begins carpeting of roads
The Chandigarh municipal corporation has started carpeting of various city roads on March 13. The City Mayor Subhash Chawla instructed the engineers concerned to complete the carpeting work of roads before the rainy season. Three divisions of the road wing started carpeting in different areas, including V-4 road (main road within sectors) in Sector 40 and V-6 roads (internal roads of sectors) in Sector 38 West, Sector 27, Sector 29-A and Sector 29-B.
