Coimbatore’s road laid during President’s visit caves in

A portion of Trichy road in Coimbatore, which was blacktopped overnight in a hurry ahead of President Pranab Mukherjee’s recent visit to the city, has caved in after not being able to withstand the weight of the heavy vehicles plying on the street.

And the city municipal corporation has also dug up the road to finish pending works of under Underground Drainage (UGD) project at the stretch, which was left incomplete after the road was blacktopped in a hurried manner to ensure a smooth ride for the President’s cavalcade to Sulur Air Station via Trichy Road.

SP Palanivel, Divisional Engineer, National Highways, Coimbatore said that the stretch was blacktopped during President’s visit by the corporation as they were engaged in UGD work in that portion. But it was not completed at that point of time. Once the work is completed then the department will take up the restoration work of the road in a proper manner.

The civic body had temporarily suspended the UGD work and laid compact layer of concrete underneath to make it a smooth road. The work was funded from the general engineering section of the corporation after it was strictly instructed that the maintenance work had to be conducted in view of the President’s visit. As per the rough estimate from the highways department, the restoration cost of the stretch would be around Rs 70 lakhs.
