EPL gets response from leading firms for container project

Domestic and global firms have reportedly shown interest in the container terminal expansion project of the Ennore Port (EPL) in response to the the portÂ’s Expression of Interest (EoI) issued recently.

The project received interest from 11 companies including multinationals such as Port of Singapore Authority, DP World and APM Terminals, local firms like Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Incidentally, L&T inaugurated its container terminal at the neighbouring Katupalli port recently.

EPL is in the process of reviving the container terminal project after it terminated the contract with Bay of Bengal Container Terminal consortium, which bagged the project, over delay in finalizing funds in October 2012.

It is learnt that the prospective concessionaire must construct a quay of over 700 meter length in phases.
In the earlier instance, the port went for a 1,000 meter container terminal. However, considering the slowdown in the global economy, the companies felt that the development should be in phases. The next step will be to issue a Request for Qualification for the project.

EPL plans to build terminals that can accommodate ships with a capacity of at least 8,000 Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) and 14,000 TEU in future.
