Water Transport Workers Federation urged the Chennai Port to develop the proposed mega container terminal of its own instead of awarding the project to a BOT or PPP (public private partnership) operator.
This is one of the demands made by the federation in its representation submitted to the Union Shipping Secretary recently.
The other demands include full budgetary support for the development of the outer harbour project at VOC Port (Tuticorin), as the union government had allocated Rs 7,500 crore for this. However, the port management is looking for a BOT or PPP operator for the project.
The federation wants this project to be executed and operated by the port management alone. It is of the view that no private ports or minor ports be allowed to come up in the vicinity of the major ports.
If any such necessity arises, the project has to be handed over to the major port and should be under its control, as advised by the parliamentary standing committee on “Modernisation of Major Ports, the federation said.
The federation also called for taking out major ports from the purview of TAMP in order to develop a healthy competition and level playing field among new generation ports.
The body also demanded that the Ministry expedite the process of Bipartite Wage Negotiating CommitteeÂ’s deliberation and arrive at an amicable settlement with the five recognised labour federations as early as possible.
