A proposal by the GMR Group for converting an aviation SEZ into a multi-product SEZ has been rejected by the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. The EAC committee felt that a multi-product SEZ would disturb the aviation activity. It ruled that conversion of the aviation SEZ, which is close to the runway, into the planned multi-product SEZ, may attract birds which may become hazardous to aircraft at the airport. The GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park, spread over 253.85 acres, has had an occupancy rate of just 11 per cent over the last six years.
