Govt plans to cut road toll to developers if project is delayed

Road developers who are collecting toll from impending road projects without completing them will be barred to collect such toll by the Union government soon. The government will prevent such road developers from collecting toll if they fail to complete the expansion work within the given period, say media reports.

The government’s move is a two-pronged strategy of cracking the whip on tardiness as well as sparing highway users from paying toll for lower quality service offered.

If such proposal is cleared by the Union Cabinet, it would mean commuters won’t have to pay toll in any future projects which involve expansion to six-lanes if the developer fails to meet the deadline. The current concession agreement allows termination of contracts in cases where the concessionaire is unable to meet its obligations.
