West Bengal government decided to shift 35 tenants and eight landlords to makeshift houses at the ground adjacent to Bidyadhari School in Duttabad in order to complete the remaining work on the elevated East-West Metro project.
Owing to issue on rehabilitation of residents, the construction of 5.77-km elevated part of the 14.58 km corridor between Howrah Maidan and Nabadiganta Township remained pending.
The delay in the project raised the construction cost (initially pegged at Rs 5,000 crore) substantially even after 75 percent of the elevated portion was completed on time.
Now, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has agreed to build houses for these 43 families at an identified location. This would enable the corporation construct seven pillars to bridge the 365-meter yawning gap.
The project cost is also learnt to be affected by the depreciation of rupee against the dollar as 45 percent of the total investment is provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
As many as 14 pillars were supposed to be built on this stretch to connect the gap between Bengal Chemical and Bidyadhari School. The KMRC has now reduced the number of pillars to seven.
