Shipping Ministry released detailed guidelines for implementing a financial scheme to incentivise shifting some portion of the cargo now carried by rail and road to coastal shipping and inland waterways to help develop them as an integral part of the country´s logistics chain. The scheme is by far the most serious step taken to promote coastal shipping and inland waterways as an alternative to road and rail by compensating for the costs incurred in availing the last-mile connectivity.
