India consumes marginally less steel during Apr-May

India consumes marginally less steel during Apr-May

During April-May 2013, India consumed 11.69 million tonne (mn t) steel, a 0.8 per cent decline from 11.78 mn t steel of steel consumed in the year-ago period. Data released by Joint Plant Committee, a body under the steel ministry shows.

During the period, steel production grew 3.1 per cent to 13.03 mn t, led by higher output by SAIL and Tata Steel. India had produced 12.64 mn t steel in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

Major steel producers like SAIL, RINL and Tata Steel produced 3.3 mn t steel during the period, up 8.5 per cent over the same period last fiscal.

The country imported 41.2 per cent less steel during the period at around 890,000 tonne compared to 1.52 mn t a year ago.

Exports, on the other hand, grew by 28.4 per cent to about 840,000 tonne.
