The specialised steel from the company’s Hazira facility reflects the growing role of domestic manufacturers in India’s defence ecosystem and maritime security.
In a major boost to self‑reliance in advanced steelmaking, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) supplied 100 per cent of the specialised steel required to build INS Malvan. The Indian Navy’s latest indigenously built anti‑submarine warfare shallow watercraft was commissioned on July 22 at Karwar, Karnataka.
Manufactured at AM/NS India’s integrated steelmaking facility in Hazira, Gujarat, this highlights the role of domestic manufacturers in supporting the country’s growing defence manufacturing ecosystem and maritime security.

Built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd, INS Malvan is the second of eight Mahe‑class vessels and the second of its class to enter service with the Indian Navy. With more than 80 per cent indigenous content, the programme supports the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat initiatives, while showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in naval design, engineering, systems integration and defence shipbuilding.
Designed for underwater surveillance, anti‑submarine warfare, mine warfare and coastal security operations, INS Malvan will strengthen the Indian Navy’s ability to safeguard India’s maritime interests and operate effectively in coastal waters.
AM/NS India is supplying all of the specialised steel required for the fleet of eight shallow watercraft being built for the Navy. Beyond this programme, the company has supplied specialised steel for key naval platforms, including INS Visakhapatnam and INS Surat. It has also contributed to several landmark national infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Anji Khad Railway Bridge, Bogibeel Bridge and the India‑based Neutrino Observatory.
