JN Port to take steps to kickstart Rs 8 bn project

The board of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) would soon take a decision to break the deadlock on the Rs 800 crore container loading facility project to be developed by DP World.

The proposed facility, with a capacity to load 800,000 standard containers a year, is key to JN PortÂ’s expansion plans.

However, the project failed to take off as mangroves have grown on the land that will serve as a back-up area for storing containers. DP World won the contract in an October auction.

This issue had delayed the signing of a so-called concession agreement for the project between JN Port and DP World even as the latter secured the contract on 31 October 2012.

DP World agreed to share 28.09 per cent of its annual revenue with the union government-controlled port in a public auction for the contract.

Now, the port authority would decide on whether to replant the mangroves in some other location or give the Dubai firm an alternative site to store containers shipped in and out of the planned terminal.

Out of the 27 hectare that were to be handed over to DP World by JN Port, more than 15 are now covered by mangroves.
