JSPL plans to start operation at 2 mn tpa unit by April

By April 2013, Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) plans to commission 2 million tonne per annum (mn tpa) greenfield steel plant at Angul, Odisha.

The plant is part of the 6 mn tpa integrated steel plant project being developed by the firm in the area. The Naveen Jindal owned company received 970.34 acre of government land and 2,819.64 acre of private land for the integrated steel and power complex from the Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Odisha (Idco).

In November 2005, JSPL entered into a pact with the state government for developing a the project at an investment of Rs 22,420 crore.

Once the plant is fully operational, it is expected to absorb 9,580 persons including 920 people in the managerial cadre, 220 technical officers, 3,750 skilled people and 4,690 in semi-skilled and other categories.

The firm promised to invest Rs 500 crore on a downstream industrial park in the state. The steel company has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government for setting up the park at Parang in Angul district.

The downstream industrial park is expected to attract investments of Rs 5,000 crore besides generating employment opportunities for 32,000 people, both direct and indirect. The park may also generate tax revenue worth Rs 700 crore per annum for the state government.

JSPL plans to set up a captive port facility at Bahuda Muhan, about 30 km south of the existing Gopalpur port and 18 km from Berhampur.
