Maharashtra Maritime Board has been making efforts to sell a 999-ton crude oil tanker named MT Pavit for the last over six months, but in no vain.
The ship, whose route is still unclear to authorities drifted to the Juhu beach over a year ago and as its owners were not coming forward, the maritime board had to take the effort of salvaging it at the cost of over Rs 4 crore.
The vessel was put up for auction twice in the last six months, is yet to find any takers. Now the board is making fresh attempts to find buyers for the vessel. An auction notice regarding the same was published in selected newspapers on January 18.
Industry sources opine that junk dealers show interest in such vessels as they would dismantle it and sell its parts to collectors and earn decent profits.
Reports suggest that the base amount of Rs 4.75 crore fixed by the board for auctioning the vessel is a reason for the failure to find buyers who are finding this price too much and feel that it is far above its actual worth.
The ship is presently anchored at Dabhol port in Ratnagiri where the maintenance cost is adding to the maritime boardÂ’s burdens. The ship was reportedly abandoned by its 13-members crew after it faced problems on the coast of Oman.
