Ministry takes steps for technological progress

Union steel ministry is taking various steps for the technological development of iron and steel sector and as part of the efforts, the ministry started a new programme “Scheme for Promotion of R&D in Iron and Steel Sector” during the 11th Five Year Plan with an allocation of Rs 118 crore.

Presently, the ministry wants to engage a reputed academic institution or laboratories or steel firm for development of innovative or path breaking technologies for utilisation of Indian iron ore fines and non-coking coal. The ministry is in the process of selecting an organisation for this purpose. The selected organisation would also be responsible for research and development projects to address climate change issues in line with other countries.

The R&D activity would also focus on beneficiation or upgradation of low grade iron ore, coal etc and agglomeration. Besides, the project also involves development of commercially viable technology for utilisation of steel plant and mine wastes including slag. Further, it would also focus on development of indigenous technologies for new process and improved products.
