MP told to form panel to deter misuse of funds for roads

To prevent misuse of money allocated for construction of roads the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has recommended to the State Government to establish a commission consisting of experts and police officers. In case of bad roads, the proposed commission should be empowered to take action against the officers and agencies responsible for this, the Commission advised.

The advice is a part of the recommendations issued to the State Government by MPHRC on February 8 regarding bad condition of roads in the state leading to increasing instances of road accidents. In its recommendations, the MPHRC has taken a serious view of unabated corruption in construction and maintenance of roads. Most of its recommendations are directed towards measures to check such corruption.

Acting Chairman of MPHRC Justice AK Saxena has asked the government to implement the recommendations and inform the Commission within two months. The Commission has also recommended that in case a road gets dilapidated soon after construction, an FIR against the officer who issued quality certificate for the road should be registered.

It has also advised the Government that only those contractors or companies should be awarded contracts for construction and maintenance of roads that have a dependable track record. A blacklisted contractor should not be awarded such contracts, it says.
