The New Mangalore Port has called a tender for a fourth berth. The port had added two additional berths in 2006 and 2011 and one more is under completion. Two warehouses are also are under construction in the port. The draft of 14 mtr has also been made available, said P Tamilvanan, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust on August 15. He added that the cargo handling at the port has increased.
Despite the decline of iron ore traffic, the port was able to handle 37.04 million tonne of cargo in 2012-13. The cost of cargo handling has also come down due to competitiveness.
Overall traffic of bulk and break bulk including container and railway traffic has also increased. Transparency in port management is the key word of NMPT that has seen the port register consistent growth over the past nine years, he said.
