These initiatives aim to make highway travel more seamless by eliminating manual documentation and providing faster commuter assistance.
The national highways developer, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has introduced citizen‑centric ‘Local Passes’ and a digitally enabled ‘MargMitra’ help centre on the Rajmargyatra mobile app. These initiatives aim to make highway travel more seamless by eliminating manual documentation and providing faster commuter assistance.
The new Local Pass feature allows eligible residents within a 20 km radius of a toll plaza to purchase monthly passes digitally, enabling unlimited travel through the respective plaza. Initially launched at the Mundka‑Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Urban Extension Road‑II (UER‑II) in Delhi, the service will be progressively rolled out nationwide.
The process leverages consent‑based integration with government platforms such as DigiLocker and VAHAN, automatically retrieving verified address, vehicle, and FASTag details. The geographic information system (GIS)‑based verification further ensures transparency and accuracy, replacing the earlier manual system.
Complementing this, NHAI has launched the MargMitra help centre, an intelligent assistance platform integrated into the app. Designed as a single‑window interface, it enables commuters to access information, seek support, and lodge grievances in any of 22 Indian languages through text or voice.
MargMitra provides instant guidance on services such as FASTag recharge, KYC requirements, refund status, and pass services. Complaints are automatically routed to the relevant department, with real‑time tracking and an option to appeal if users are dissatisfied. It also allows commuters to check FASTag blacklisting status, view pending e‑notices, and report road safety concerns such as stalled vehicles or encroachments.
These features build on the app’s earlier success, which saw the sale of 8 million annual passes with real‑time activation, reinforcing NHAI’s push toward digital convenience and transparency for highway users.
