Project delays in states cost Centre Rs 66,619 crore

Delays in projects being implemented in various states will cost the Union Government an additional Rs 66,619 crore. According to government data, 45 per cent of the centrally funded projects worth Rs 272,247 crore in states have been delayed, incurring a cost overrun of 24 per cent till April 2011.

According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, out of the 560 Centre-aided projects costing Rs 150 crore and above each being implemented in all the states, 251 have been delayed by up to 100 months. This has led to a cost escalation of 24 per cent, from Rs 272,247.64 crore to Rs 338,867.02 crore.

In many states all the projects that have been taken up are running behind schedule, leading to extra expenditure. In Andhra Pradesh, the Centre has taken up 31 projects and all of them are delayed by 3-71 months. The cost of these projects has gone up 34 per cent, from Rs 18,204.57 crore to Rs 21,712.38 crore.
