The company will oversee the project from concept to commissioning, scheduled for completion within 42 months across a 472‑hectare site.
The railway infrastructure major, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), has been awarded a landmark project by the mining sector leader, NMDC, for the execution of a state‑of‑the‑art buffer stockpiles and blending yard facility at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, at a total project cost of about ₹29.77 billion. Both RVNL and NMDC are Navratna public sector enterprises under the ministries of Railways and Steel, respectively.
The project envisages the development of a modern iron ore handling system comprising buffer stockpiles and blending yards, integrated with civil, material handling, and railway infrastructure. Designed with a handling capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the facility will enable blending of iron ore to achieve desired grades for domestic and international customers, ensuring compliance with stringent quality specifications.
“India’s growth story increasingly calls for integrated infrastructure ecosystems that seamlessly connect natural resources, industry, and logistics networks. As the country’s requirements in the mining and steel sectors continue to expand, world‑class material handling and evacuation infrastructure will assume even greater importance. By leveraging its multidisciplinary expertise and technology‑driven approach, RVNL is committed to delivering sustainable and future‑ready infrastructure solutions that contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat,” an official RVNL spokesperson said.
The assignment further strengthens RVNL’s diversification journey into advanced material handling systems and large‑scale industrial infrastructure. RVNL will be responsible for the project from concept to commissioning, encompassing engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing, and associated activities. Scheduled for completion within 42 months, the project will cover a 472‑hectare area.
The proposed logistics hub will provide an efficient ecosystem for storage, blending, and movement of iron ore. It is expected to play a critical role in supporting NMDC’s growing production and evacuation requirements, capacity expansion plans, and enhancing India’s ability to serve both domestic and global iron ore markets.
Leveraging its extensive experience in executing technologically complex projects, particularly in the railway sector, RVNL has evolved into a diversified infrastructure company with capabilities across railways, metros, highways, ports, telecom, solar, and building infrastructure. From delivering the iconic New Pamban Bridge, executing the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Link through the Himalayan terrain, undertaking metro projects across ten cities, to the manufacturing of Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets, RVNL has consistently demonstrated its ability to deliver world‑class infrastructure solutions across sectors.
