The Tamil Nadu government, as part of its efforts to tide over the current power crisis, has been implementing various steps to conserve electricity. Recently, the State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa unveiled a solar power policy aimed at tapping 3,000 mw of power in the next three years (details in box).
In a first-of-its kind initiative in India, a centralised streetlight system will be installed in rural areas of the state and conventional lamps will be replaced with energy saving solar lights. The government has entrusted the task of implementation of this centralised scheme to Tamilnadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), which in turn roped in Su-Kam Power Systems through international bidding process.
The State’s streetlight project is currently being implemented in seven districts of western Tamilnadu — Erode, Namakkal, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Salem, Karur and Tirupur. A total of 3,220 street lights are being installed and and the amount of energy saved will approximately be 282,072 units per annum. The total cost is Rs 30 crore.
