Residents of Visakhapatnam’s old areas like Kotha Veedhi and other areas in the locality will be relieved from dust pollution if the proposed mechanisation programme at Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) goes as per the plan. The VPT has lined up a series of coal mechanisation programmes involving crores of rupees.

With the commissioning of the first of the three coal mechanisation programmes, mechanised coal handling facility at the general cargo berth, manual unloading at the outer harbour has come to an end relieving people in the old city of dust pollution. VPT Chairman Ajeya Kallam said that VPT will take all possible measures to contain pollution by mechanisation of coal and fertiliser handling, which will be complete in the next 18 months.

Ajeya Kallam said the Rs 444.1 crore mechanised coal handling facility by Vedanta Resources at VPT was commissioned recently and with this, the outer harbour has become clean totally as it would do away with the movement of trucks and spreading of coal particles in the air.
