Work on Gopalpur Port progresses according to schedule

Sources from Gopalpur Ports (GPL) informed that the improvement and construction work of the port was progressing as per the schedule.

The breakwater to the south of the port had to be of 2,170 meter long. Its 1,700 meter was complete. The work of intermediate breakwater has been finished.

Odisha government earlier awarded a contract to GPL to take over the existing Gopalpur port and expand it into a major all-weather port on Build-Operate-Own-Share-Transfer (BOOST) basis.

The GPL is also constructing 11 groynes as part of its corporate social responsibility. Approximately 80 percent of the work of these groynes has been complete. According to the estimates of the GPL authorities this year they may handle around 2.40 million tonne (mn t) of cargo.

Cargo handling at the all-weather port may begin from March 31, by which time one berth would be completely ready to accept vessels, reports suggest.

Work on other 2 berths of this port is also continuing. Work on next 2 berths with all mechanization was likely to be completed by end of December this year.

The formal inauguration of the port was likely to be held after all the 3 berths of the port were prepared for cargo handling, reports indicate. The GPL was likely to send a formal request to the state government on March 18 to begin cargo handling.
