Commercial activities at regional airports have been delayed as the Planning Commission does not agree with the Airports Authority of India's (AAI) view of keeping the airports' terminal building out of the scope of commercial development.
AAI believes that if the maintenance of the terminal building of an airport goes out of its hands, it could have big security implications and can decrease the efficiency of the private developer in undertaking city-side development.
The Planning Commission has expressed reservations and so the AAI is tweaking the Request for Quotation (RFQ) document all over again, which may take another month.
Last November, the government approved undertaking city-side development of 24 out of 35 non-metro airports. Together they have about 300-400 acres of land.
The AAI is looking to fetch Rs 150-300 crore annually from commercial or city-side development of airports. Initially, city-side development of 10 airports will be undertaken in Phase-I.
