Considering the location of VOC Port in the Gulf of Mannar biosphere, a maritime research facility has also been proposed. The proposal was submitted to the Tamil Nadu government by VOC Port Trust Chairman, A Subbiah, when he recently called on the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary to discuss about the port's development.
