The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has started a feasibility study of the existing state highways (SH) to declare them national highways (NH) running throÂugh different states. This will mean a better maintenance and upgrade of the highways as once they are declared NH. The Centre will maintain these roads by redesigning them.
Recently, 836 km length of seven stretches of SHs in Rajasthan was converted into NH by a gazette notification. Rajasthan has forwarded the list of stretches totaling 6,462 km of state highways for upgrading them as NHs. The other states which have sent proposals for upgrade of SHs include Andhra Pradesh (11,161 km), Karnataka (7,744 km), Maharashtra (7,268 km) and Gujarat (6,857 km).
