It is learnt that Ennore port, located 25 km north off Chennai, is emerging as an alternative for automobile exports because of capacity constraint in the Chennai port.
Marc Nassif, Managing Director, Renault India, said the Ennore port provides adequate capacity and authorities are willing and helpful.
The port is said to have shipped 1.04 lakh cars last year and expects this number to rise to 1.6 lakh cars this year.
Exports are expected to touch 1.8 lakh units next year. In two years, the full capacity of 3 lakh units will be used, a top official of Ennore Port said. Japanese carmaker Nissan exported 80,000 units last year from the port.
This year, it will ship 1.20 lakh units; in two years it could be hiked to 1.80 lakh units. Toyota is looking to exporting 30,000 units this year and increasing it to 80,000 units next year. American auto major Ford is expected to export 30,000 units this year.
