The Indian Railways seeks increase in budgetary support for 2013-14 to Rs 38,000 crore from Rs 24,000 crore in the current financial year because of rise in diesel cost and a large number of pending projects.

During the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), Railways plans to invest Rs 5 trillion in capacity addition. With the increase in passenger fares from December 22, Railways will mop up Rs 6,600 crore in 2013-14. However, the recent hike in diesel price has affected the national transporter adversely and may cost Rs 3,300 crore as additional cost. Reports suggest that the Railways is executing over 200 projects worth Rs 1.47 trillion and is planning to complete some of these works in the next fiscal.

In 2013-14, the Railways expect to generate Rs 7,000 crore revenue from internal generation and Rs 18,000 crore from market borrowing next financial year.
