Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) may be able to increase its steel output as it is almost completing the Rs 12,000 crore expansion project, which would double its production capacity from 2 mn t to 4.5 mn tpa (million tonne per annum) of hot metal.

The project would also increase its crude steel and saleable steel capacity. The company is also expected to commission the new 4,060 cubic metre blast furnace, largest in India within one month.

As part of the project, the company operationalised the Coke dry cooling plant (CDCP), Coal Handling Plant as well as Coal Chemicals unit. The total investment in this complex is said to be around Rs 1,400 crore.

The firm also made operational a new Coke Ovens Battery number 11 at IISCO Steel Plant (ISP), Burnpur in February. SAIL launched it through adoption of CDCP and other pollution abatement systems.

Referring to the ambitious expansion work which is underway in full steam at RSP, a senior plant official said already two more units have entered into fully functional stage, thus adding more capacity for the steel major.
