Andhra Pradesh-based Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal (KPCT) intends to construct a jetty for handling liquefied natural gas (LNG) and petroleum oil and lubricants in the next two years.
Besides, the port, which is said to be having the biggest and deepest draft container terminal on the east coast of the country, is in the process of setting up a dedicated terminal for export of cars.
The all-weather container terminal is being set up at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore and it was dedicated to the nation by Chief Minister Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy.
On September 30, 2011, Phase I of KPCT was commissioned and it has 2 berths with a total berth length of 650 metre.
According to the master plan of KPCL, the terminal will have a total of 42 berths with total quay length of 12.5 kilometre (km) and a draft of 20 metre, capable of handling 200,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) super capsize ships.
The terminal could handle maximum of 6 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) a year once the 2nd phase is completed compared to the existing capacity of 1.2 million TEU.
Phase II, expected to be finished by the end of the present fiscal year, comprises seven container berths with a total berth length of 2,000 meters.
