The Union government has launched an initiative for the development of coal-based Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) each with a capacity of 4,000 mw. Sixteen UMPPs have been identified in various parts of the country. Out of these, two UMPPs are identified for being located in Tamil Nadu.
So far, four UMPPs have been awarded to the developers selected through International Tariff based competitive bidding process. Mundra UMPP is fully commissioned and generating electricity. First unit of Sasan UMPP has been synchronized in March 2013.
Other units of Sasan UMPP and all the units of Krishnapatnam and Tilaiya UMPP are likely to be commissioned in the 12th Plan, except the last unit of Tilaiya UMPP which is expected in 13th Plan.
Other UMPPs are in various stages of development and commissioning schedule of these UMPPs can be given only after the projects are awarded to the developers. States namely Odisha will get 50 per cent power from two additional UMPPs proposed in the State of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh will get 50 per cent power from second UMPP in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra will get 50 per cent power from UMPP proposed in Maharashtra.
