Punjab govt to spend Rs 14 bn in 6 districts

Punjab government decided to spend Rs 1,433.97 crore on upgrading basic civic amenities like road, water, sanitation and social infrastructure facilities in six districts falling in the border areas.

Specifically, the amount would be spent on improving these facilities in 18 blocks of Amritsar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Gurdaspur, Pathankot and Tarn Taran districts in the state.

The government would spend these funds on the construction and repair of roads including link roads through PWD (B&R) and Mandi Board, implementation of potable water and sanitation schemes, strengthening and revamping of canals, water courses etc.

The investment would also go on channels and distributaries, upgradation of health care facilities, animal husbandry besides revamping the school and college infrastructure.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal sanctioned the amount to ensure better quality of life to the inhabitants of these difficult areas. The package would help in percolating the fruits of welfare schemes for them through inclusive development at the grass roots level, an official spokesman said.

Badal advised the MLAs representing these areas on how to spend the amount with the participation of local Panchayats, Municipal Committees and other local bodies.
