In a bid attract more investment in the port sector the Ministry of Shipping is finally coming out with a decision to remove Tariff Authority of Major Ports (TAMP) control over major ports in this month end, a senior ministry official said here today. The move is one of the reform processes towards the de-regulation.
“We are planning to abolish TAMP in order give more opportunity to ports to attract more investment. We are in talks with various players of the industry on this regard. I expect the final nod will come up in next 14-20 day time,” said Vishwapati Trivedi, Secretary , Ministry of Shipping, GoI to Infrastructure Today.
According to Trivedi the de regulation will come in a phased manner and after discussions with various owners of the industry.
He said the government would issue new guidelines on tariffs. Unlike today where the operators were being regulated by the TAMP, the new operators would be free to fix their own tariff and in the process the government would come out with a new policy for the TAMP, which would not fix tariff.
This would encourage more players to come into the port capacity building plan, he added.
Currently the TAMP regulates tariffs at 12 major ports, including the private terminals located therein. These ports handle 60 per cent of the business.
