In Odisha, implementation of road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) are getting delayed and the Union government has expressed concern on the same. The Union government is also worried over the quality of the construction work of the roads under PMGSY. This has been conveyed to the Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik by the Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh through a letter.
Ramesh stated that 2,048 road projects going on for more than two years are yet to be completed. The Odisha government has not raised the number of programme implementation units (PIUs) to 70 before issuing tenders.
Ramesh said that quality is a major problem with nine per cent of completed roads while 25 per cent of ongoing works have been judged unsatisfactory. The State Government is yet to set up institutional quality monitors, the Minister noted.
