The All-India Agricultural Workers´ Union (AIAWU) members staged a protest against the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) for recommending measures against the free supply of electricity to irrigation pump sets (IP sets), and fixing meters to the Bhagya Jyothi and Kuteera Jyothi schemes.
Some AIAWU members went on a rally from the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway and staged a demonstration outside the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC). According to them, the KERC had ordered a GPS-based survey to calculate the power consumption by IP sets, and recommended a power tariff hike across the state recently. The protesters urged Energy Minister DK Shivakumar to continue the schemes as they were introduced for families below the poverty line (BPL).
